Rockfish Country Kids (RCK) school strives to nurture the whole child – physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively, and most importantly, spiritually, promoting a lifelong love of learning. By combining the educational framework of Montessori, Reggio, Forest School, and Waldorf, we meet and often exceed educational standards in a unique way.
We emphasize independence and respect for a child’s natural psychological development while teaching a biblical worldview with developmentally appropriate methods supported by therapists, early childhood and elementary education leaders, pastors, pediatricians, and psychiatrists worldwide. There is no rushing learning and unfortunately doctors are noticing the negative effect a forced approach on education is having on the mental health of our children. They, and we, advocate to bring back realistic and relaxed expectations of the early years. RCK does not teach to “pass the test” but rather meets each child where they are while trusting in the process that they will master standards when they are ready.
We believe children are not made to sit at a desk all day with teachers monologuing lessons, but that today’s classrooms need to be exploratory, interactive, challenging, and project-based — environments where students are actively engaged in their learning journey. We know that children are both excited to learn about things they are interested in and enjoy working in small, focused groups either with the teacher or themselves. Students get the personalized support they need to advance in their education as they learn at their own pace with these ideas.
Our students understand that it’s okay to take risks and try new things even if they don’t succeed at first, as learning through failure is a powerful tool that builds resilience, problem-solving skills, and deeper understanding. Our role as educators isn’t to ensure that every student succeeds immediately; instead, it’s to create a safe and loving space where students have plenty of opportunities to try — and to learn from all experiences. Helping children learn to handle their emotions, engage socially with their peers, and learn to negotiate and cooperate assists them as they embrace challenges to push personal and academic boundaries. It’s through tackling and overcoming challenges that true growth happens.
At RCK, we want every child to be successful in the path God has for them to discover their individual gifts. We support teaching students to look at life through a biblical lens to recognize true faith from religion and truth from deception. Our staff is dedicated to developing a positive relationship with our parents to assist them in their God-given role to instruct their children and share the great responsibility of helping each child discover and fulfill God’s purpose for their lives. Together we will teach children to love God through His word and love learning itself.
The Bible states that parents God given responsibility is to "bring children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord”. RCK shares the responsibility for instruction in faith and academics with parents and strives to have a school atmosphere that instructs each child in a way that is consistent with the Bible and supportive of a godly home environment. We want to help parents teach their children that all they do should be done "heartily, as unto the Lord". We will love every child and family where they are as in 1 John 4:7-8: Love is from God, and knowing God is to know love.
We see that God's “invisible attributes” or character can be seen throughout all of creation as well as what is revealed through His Word (Romans 1:20) . All knowledge is interrelated and can teach us about God Himself. God commands us to love Him with all our minds, as well as with all our hearts, souls, and strength (Matthew 22:37).
Forest School - Nature School Philosophy – These programs support the RCK vision above and the following:
At forest school, we see the additional benefits of using nature as the primary context of learning. The curriculum is nature as the children explore the world around them through an emergent and inquiry-based learning style. Students can observe and ask questions for short and long-term investigations that integrate multiple subjects such as bible, math, science, and literacy in whole groups, small groups, and individually; as some planned teacher-facilitated activities, child-initiated interests, and spontaneous pursuits; in the play areas, and throughout the grounds. Through nature-based education, we foster curiosity, community, and imagination to inspire stewardship and empower learners who will have a lifelong connection to the world that God created.
Private school should be accessible to every child - please reach out about scholarship opportunities if you have a need. The NC opportunity scholarship is an amazing resource!
Looking forward, we may add grades each school year!
